Is it PTSD? Understanding the Symptoms of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder

Trauma can leave a lasting impact on our mental and emotional health, leading to feelings of distress that we try to avoid at all costs.   • Unwanted intrusive memories or thoughts

  • Flashbacks to the traumatic event

  • Nightmares

  • Emotional distress when reminded of the event

  • Physical reactions like increased heart rate or physical discomfort

  1. Changes in Arousal and Reactivity: After experiencing trauma, our bodies may never fully return to a state of normal functioning and may constantly be in a state of increased stress. This can manifest as:

  • Hypervigilance or constantly being on the lookout for potential threats

  • Increased startle response

  • Risky behaviors

  • Difficulty concentrating or sleeping

  • Irritability or aggression

  1. Changes in Cognition and Mood: The trauma can also lead to negative changes in our thoughts and emotions. This cluster of symptoms can include:

  • Negative thoughts about yourself, others, or the world

  • Excessive blaming of yourself or others

  • Persistent negative emotions like sadness or anger

  • Difficulty feeling positive emotions or experiencing pleasure

  • Memory difficulties
