For example, instead of thinking "This pain means I'm weak," you can reframe it to "Pain is a signal, but it doesn't define my strength." Reminding yourself that the pain is chemical reactions such as cortisol, adrenaline, and others causing the pain, “This is chemical reactions not structural damage and I can find ways to change it“.

Studies show that cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), which includes cognitive restructuring, is an effective treatment for chronic pain, leading to reduced pain intensity and improved pain-related functioning [1].

Distress Tolerance Skills for Managing Tough Moments

Module 3 also teaches distress tolerance skills to help you navigate emotional challenges that might arise during pain flares. These might include:

  • Mindfulness of Breath: Focusing on your breath to anchor yourself in the present moment.

  • Distraction Techniques: Engaging in activities that take your mind off the pain.

  • Radical Acceptance: Accepting the reality of your pain without judgment.
