You’re Not Alone On This Path.

At The Woods Counselling Co., I understand the struggles you're facing, and I’m here to support you.

Hi, I’m Elysia Bronson, a warm, authentic, and compassionate Registered Clinical Counsellor. I’ve specialized in working with chronic pain and trauma because I’m able to offer the unique blend of lived experience of having navigated these challenges myself. I get that chronic pain and trauma can feel isolating, like you're navigating a complex maze alone. I’ve wondered this path, while being a mom, student, business owner, and therapist.

As a Registered Clinical Counsellor who has personally traversed the challenging terrain of chronic illness, I know firsthand the emotional and physical toll it takes. I've balanced the weight of it, and that’s why I'm dedicated to providing evidence-based care, tailored to individuals like yourself, who may be dealing with a recent diagnosis, daily chronic pain, chronic illness, or past trauma. Whether you’ve just been diagnosed, started treatments or are balancing life with a disorder, I can understand the unique challenges you face, and will draw from my lived experiences with chronic illness and combine it with my professional expertise as a Registered Clinical Counsellor to support you through this time.

Support for Your Mental Health

Together in our sessions we will create a warm and safe environment where you can find the one-to-one support you need. I’ll use counselling approaches that are grounded in the latest research, ensuring you receive the most effective care possible. And if you're processing trauma, from life, an ICBC accident, or simply exploring ways to enhance your overall well-being, I’m here to help guide you with skills, resources, and a listening ear every step of the way.

Elysia Bronson a Chronic illness and chronic pain therapist

A Deeper Connection: I tailor my therapy approaches to your individual needs. Everyone has different disorder with different symptoms, and sometimes there's an overlap of our lived experience, in which I deeply understand. With clients who have fibromyalgia, chronic migraine, chronic fatigue, trigeminal autonomic cephalgia, or other disorders, I often share similar symptoms. Full disclosure: I have multiple disorders, some rare, some common. This means we'll probably understand each other on a deeper level when theres a similarity in disorders. This allows for a deeper level of understanding when there's a shared experience. Even if I don't have your specific condition, my extensive experience working with a wide range of chronic illnesses allows me to empathize and provide effective strategies.

Building Trust and Open Communication: I value open communication and believe in a collaborative approach. I love hearing about my clients' lives and lived experiences. It's important to me that you feel comfortable explaining what your chronic illness is like for you. Having faced similar challenges with appointments, gaslighting, and the medical system, I understand the frustration that can come with navigating chronic illness and trying to explain it to others. These are all things we can work through together. Many clients tell me, "I've never met someone who gets it," and that's exactly what I strive for – a safe space where you feel understood. If your concerned lets have a chat.

Take A Clear Personalized Approach: I don’t beat around the bush or talk over your head. Often, I’ll pull up slides to help explain skills, and together we uncover the connection between your symptoms and how stress affects your condition. I’ll teach you at your own pace the new coping skills that are based on how your finding your disorder affects you. And we will work together to find strategies to address both your physical and emotional well-being. You'll start seeing improvements after a few weeks. During this process, I may jump into teaching mode or helping with processing, all based on what's needed in that moment. Usually I leverage my interests in the latest pain and illness research when I create resources that I use with clients and in my work with BC Pain, and the Canadian Pain Society. Through using this information we will collaborate and find ways to increase your quality of life, balance all the things you need to manage, and bring back feelings of control and authenticity.

Together We Address Interpersonal Issues: Navigating relationships can be tough without chronic health issues, and it’s especially tough when dealing with low energy, work, or parenthood. I’ll help you improve your interpersonal skills and manage issues that arise. As a parent of young ones and someone who balances work, friendships, holidays, and family obligations, I can relate to the drain and overwhelm that comes. We'll work together to problem-solve whatever's happening and make it easier to have gatherings, connect, and maintain meaningful relationships.

Manage Our Anxiety with a New Disorder: The uncertainty and stress of a new diagnosis can be overwhelming. Believe me, I get it! It can feel like your world’s been turned upside down, and life isn’t going the way you thought it would. We’ll get through this together. We can work to manage how your treatments or symptoms affect your life. Often, this includes processing the experiences of being diagnosed and learning skills that help you regain a feeling of control and calm.

Rebalance Your Life with Illness and Stress: Juggling daily responsibilities while managing your health can feel like an impossibly daunting full-time task. I know! I’ve dealt with it for 15 years while going to school, having kids, and running a business. This is very much a lived experience for me. Along the way, we’ll laugh, and I’ll provide you with practical strategies based on my experiences, then rebalance you with evidence-based theories that helped me. Together we’ll find your balance and reduce your stress, allowing you to live a more enjoyable life.

Untangle Stuck Points in Your Healing Journey: Sometimes our progress feels hindered, and there are pieces that are really hard to get past. Trauma can be like trying to untangle a ball of yarn, but it’s an area I have a passion for. We’ll learn about how the brain handles trauma, identify the symptoms, and find ways to address these barriers, helping you move forward in your healing journey. These are all things we can cope with, and the best part is you won’t be alone in it.

Survive and Thrive During Crises: In particularly tough times, finding the strength to carry on can be daunting and feel impossible. I’ll support you with strategies and skills to help you survive, talk through it, and find your own ways to thrive through these crises. I have a big toolbox from my years of schooling, work, and advocacy efforts, to pull coping skills from. Don’t worry, we can find one that fits you.

Reduce feelings of isolation: Connecting with a compassionate therapist who understands your medical experiences and can offer you the tools and support you need can be a game changer. You can meet with me online each week and feel like someone truly understands what you're going through. Start to picture a life where you feel empowered and in control again. We can get there. If you’re ready, take the first step by scheduling your free consultation or booking online today.

I look forward to supporting you on your journey to improved well-being.

Warm regards,

  • "Health Counselling for Family Caregivers Online"

    Josh M.

First time talking to a counsellor and I know for a fact I couldn’t have made a better choice. I feel like most people fear judgement, and I’m definitely one of them but from the first interaction, I’ve felt extremely comfortable opening up and feel understood but also align with every piece of advice and guidance I’ve been given. Thanks Elysia!

Elysia is incredibly understanding and supportive. She has helped me develop tools to manage my chronic illness and improve my mental health. - Sarah M.

  • "Health Counselling for Family Caregivers Online"

    Nathalie C.

I am so happy that I found Elysia. She takes such a technical approach to helping me - which makes the path forward seem a lot more inviting and less overwhelming. She's giving me the tools and she's patiently and kindly teaching me how to use them. Elysia is incredibly intelligent and her knowledge of people and how our brains work is so impressive. I don't feel like I'm just sitting there talking about my problems. Elysia is teaching me how and why I feel the way I do, and ways in which I can improve the way I think and feel about myself and situations I find myself in on a day to day basis.

  • "Cancer Therapist for Trauma Support Canada"

    Emma S.

I'll be forever grateful. When I started therapy I was really really anxious of being vulnerable and sharing about my trauma and relationship and feeling dumb. I'd never done therapy and had some bad experiences with social workers. But when I met Elysia she was a warm gentle spirit. She was open to helping and non-judgmental towards anything I said. Nothing was too uncomfortable to say, and she made me feel like I wasn't crazy. It's been months and I don't know where I'd be without her.

  • "Personal Counseling for Chronic Pain, Chronic Illness, and Disease Management. Support through disability and illness. Learn to manage pain with counselling for chronic conditions

    Bridget B.

I highly recommend The Woods Counselling Co. for anyone struggling with chronic illness and mental health challenges. It was so wonderful to have Elysia to support me each week. and give me tools as I faced cancer and treatments.
