how do i find a therapist that's right for me?
When choosing a therapist online, it’s important to make sure they are qualified for the job. That’s why the BC Association of Clinical Counsellors requires all therapists that are registered with them whether providing therapy in person or online therapy in BC, to adhere to specific requirements. Stating that, “Registered Clinical Counsellors have a minimum of a Master’s Degree in a variety of areas such as psychology or social work. And have additional training in their specific area of practice through yearly continuing education. And to have also satisfied BCACC’s clinical supervision requirements that are criteria of membership.” (BCACC, 2023) You can be sure that you’ll get better therapy at The Woods Counselling Co. because your virtual therapist will meet and exceed all these requirements.

DBT Coaching
Elysia is Certified as a Dialectical Behavioral Therapist with extensive experience teaching the four DBT skills modules in both one-on-one sessions and large groups. The use of DBT has been shown to be highly effective, with research showing significant reductions in depression symptoms. For example, a study by Linton (2010) found that DBT treatment led to a drop in depression scores from 26 on the Beck Depression Inventory to a 5, falling within the normal range. As a Certified DBT Therapist, Elysia is skilled in using this evidence-based therapy to help individuals improve their mental health and well-being.
Chronic Disease Management
While this is an area Elysia has lived experience in this area she has also combined psychology masters and specialized chronic illness as an area of research interest. Through this research Elysia has written multiple articles on the intersectionality between chronic illness and mental health, and has both created and taught a self-management style course that is based on current evidence on energy pacing as it shows significant improvements with fatigue and pain based illnesses.
Through her chronic disease course, Elysia works with clients from a wide range of backgrounds with CRP, Cancer, Chronic fatigue Syndrome, and those needing both caregiver support, cancer support for family members, and more. To create a pacing plan that fits their illness and functional capacity. When managing chronic illnesses Elysia leans towards an integrative care odel, a comprehensive approach to treatment that considers social-environmental, biological, and psychological factors. And this is generally where she starts by taking a holistic approach, and then with the client she works to develop a plan that incorporates their symptoms that are unique to their chronic disease and pairs it with health management tools to help them regain control over their symptoms. Through the Biopsychosocial Model training it allows us to offer comprehensive, personalized care that addresses the unique needs of each individual. As well as having completed extra training in cancer counselling through the Psycho-Oncology Society.
Integrative Therapy
With experience working with a diverse range of disorders and demographics, Elysia has found that combining Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT) with Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) can be a particularly effective approach. CBT focuses on thoughts and behaviors, while DBT provides the skills to change those behaviors. This complementary approach has been found to be particularly effective in working with trauma and has been shown to be beneficial for a larger number of clients and to produce greater results. Elysia is skilled in using this integrated therapy approach to help individuals with chronic disease conditions, caregivers, me cfs diagnosis, and psychological stress, to improve their mental health and well-being. One example is where a CRP patient came in at a pain level of 9 and dropped to a 6 by the end of treatment.
