Parenting Skills
As a caregiver and as a parent, you want to provide the best possible support for your child, especially when they have experienced trauma or illness. But, it can be challenging to find effective parenting methods that work in such situations. This is why we created a Parenting Skills handout that can be extremely helpful. Using the methods developed by the Medical University of South Carolina, this resource is based on Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TF CBT) and offers valuable strategies that can help your child heal and flourish from trauma.
When supporting your child you can choose to go the self guided route through finding resources, and if your child is sick learning from our Chronic Disease Self-Management Program or work with a virtual therapist to learn these skills together. Either option can be effective and whichever you choose is probably the best one for you.

The handout outlines a number of effective strategies, one of which is using praise to encourage positive behaviors. It is not uncommon for parents to unintentionally criticize their child for undesirable behaviors instead of providing enough praise. The handout offers specific ways to give praise, such as labeling the behavior and providing praise as soon as possible after it occurs.
Another powerful strategy outlined is active ignoring. This involves choosing not to react to non-dangerous, undesirable behavior and instead, pairing specific praise for positive behavior that takes the place of the undesirable behavior. The handout provides guidance on how to effectively ignore the behavior, including avoiding verbal or emotional reactions and never ignoring dangerous or unsafe behavior.
The handout also provides guidance on using time-out and behavioral charts as effective strategies for decreasing undesirable behavior and increasing desirable behavior. It emphasizes the importance of consistency and involving the child in the decision-making process.
Implementing these strategies may take some effort, and working with a trained therapist is advised. But the benefits are worth it and this is especially true in families where kids have significant behavior problems, and where there is a high degree of family conflict. By using these strategies, you can help your child heal from trauma and create a positive, healthy home environment.
So, if you're a parent seeking ways to support your child's healing and growth after experiencing trauma, consider purchasing the Parenting Skills handout. With practical strategies based on TF CBT, this resource can provide valuable insights and help you and your child lead happier, more peaceful lives together.
